New Year’s Resolutions Checklist

Tonight is New Year’s Eve! When the clock strikes twelve, it will be a brand new year, 2011! A lot of people like to make New Year’s Resolutions for the new year. What this means is that people think of ways to improve things in the new year. What are some of your resolutions? Some time today, make a checklist with five resolutions you have. During 2011, as these things get accomplished, simply check them off. Make sure they continue on, or else you will need to uncheck them. By late December in 2011, your resolutions should be accomplished.My New Year’s Resolutions

Melissa Parker lay asleep in her bed. She dreamed of her perfect Christmas- all the presents, the snow, and the beautiful tree, lights sparkling and ornaments dangling. Suddenly she heard a loud ring and woke up immediately. She looked up at her alarm clock, the bright flashing blue color. She wiped her eyes and stood up. “It’s Christmas!” she whispered joyfully. She opened the curtains and looked down at the grass. The ground was completely white and so were the roofs of all of the houses. She jumped up with excitement and ran to wake up Meredith.
“Meredith! Wake up! It’s Christmas!”
Meredith smiled and looked at the time. “No. It’s only six o’clock. Wake me up in at least an hour.”
Melissa nodded and hurried downstairs. She looked under the tree and put all the presents labeled “Melissa” in one pile. “Ooh, Santa gave me a big present!” She picked it up and shook it around. She heard nothing. She looked in her stocking and saw a box with a doll inside. Melissa went to find her wish list and picked out all of the possible things Santa could’ve gotten her.
“Good,” her parents said. “Can we open presents now?”
“Let’s have breakfast and some settling time now.”
“No, MOMMY!” She whined. “Melissa.” “PLEASE!” Melissa’s mother looked angry. “Sweetie, we will get to presents in a few minutes.”
Melissa sighed. “Fiiiine.” A few minutes later, Meredith and Melissa sat beside the Christmas tree. “First of all,” Meredith said, “I’d like to give you this present.” Meredith handed her parents a large bag. Mrs. Parker carefully unwrapped it and pulled out a large silver frame with a very nice family collage. “Aww, Meredith, this is so sweet! I love it!” She gave Meredith a kiss on the cheek. “Okay, Mel. You’re up,” Meredith said, pointing to Melissa. “I didn’t get you guys anything, I’m sorry.” “It’s okay, Melissa. Well, you girls can open your presents now!”
Melissa immediately tore open her presents. She was very excited. She got a baby pink Snuggie, a Barbie doll, a penguin Beanie Baby, and the Samantha American Girl Doll. “Yay! But I asked for a tie-dye Snuggie. And this isn’t enough.” “We couldn’t find tie-dye Snuggies. And really? This isn’t enough?” There was disappointment in Mrs. Parker’s voice. She wrapped her arm around Melissa. “Melissa, dear, the American Girl doll was quite expensive. You’re lucky you got anything. Did you know that some kids out there don’t get anything for Christmas?” “Nothing?” Melissa asked. “Nothing.” “Wow. That’s terrible.”
“I know. Besides, Christmas isn’t about presents. Christmas has a lot of meanings. In my opinion, it is nice to spend the holidays with your family. Sure presents are fun and all, but Christmas can go on without them.”
Melissa’s eyes teared up. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”
Mrs. Parker gave Melissa a kiss on her forehead. “Sweetheart, it’s okay. But just remember, we are very cautious with our money. You’re very fortunate.” Melissa nodded. “Mommy, I am going to make you and Daddy presents right now.” Mrs. Parker smiled. “Sweetie, that’s very nice. But remember, Christmas can go on.” Melissa shrugged. “I don’t care.”
Suddenly the doorbell rang and Melissa ran and opened it. “Carly! Merry Christmas! What are you doing here?”
“Come on in Carly,” Mrs. Parker said politely from the other room. “You must be freezing.” “Thanks, Mrs. P. Here, Melissa.” Carly handed Melissa a large bag with candy canes printed on the side. “Ooh, thanks! Umm, your present is….. well, the truth is, I didn’t get you anything. But… I’ll go up to my room and get one of my bracelets I don’t want.” Carly nodded and they raced upstairs. Melissa gave Carly a bracelet and then opened the gift immediately. She pulled out the American Girl make-up/hair kit. “Oh, gosh, Carly! I love it! Thanks!” Melissa hugged Carly. “So, want to go play in the snow?” “Sure,” Carly replied. “This is the best Christmas ever!”
